General Description
Port Coquitlam is primarily a suburban residential community within
the GVRD, Greater Vancouver Regional District. It is bounded by the Fraser
River to the south, the Pitt River, and Pitt Meadows to the east, Burke
Mountain to the north, and Coquitlam to the west. It has a population
of about 47,000 (1999 census). It is also home to Terry Fox, the courageous
athlete, who raised millions of dollars for the Cancer Foundation on
his cross-Canada run. He finally succumbed to the disease himself when
he was close to completing this epic run and won the hearts of the nation.
There is the annual Terry Fox run in many parts of the Canada to commemorate
his heroic effort and example.
Economy
Port Coquitlam is home to the main CP Rail yard in British Columbia.
Expansion and diversification of the industrial base beyond the railroad
activity makes the city one of the most attractive industrial locations
in B.C. It has two distinct commercial areas: the north side commercial
area at the intersection of Coast Meridian Rd and Prairie Avenue; then
the city's historical downtown along Shaugnessy Street, in which area
the newly expanded City Hall (1988) and the new provincial courthouse
has just been built. There is still considerable agriculture activity
carried on within the limits of the city.
Housing & Real Estate
Port Coquitlam is basically a suburban bedroom community. Most residents
live here and work somewhere else. In the past ten years there has been
a substantial increase in the number of households. It offers a diversity
of lifestyles; for newer contemporary homes with outstanding Fraser River
view, this can be found in the Citadel Heights neighbourhood within the
Maryhill area, with price ranges of $250k - $390k for a single detach
home depending on size and view factor, which has extremely good highway
access on the bypass to Lougheed Hwy and No.1 Hwy; the Riverwood development
near the Pitt River offers 130 hectares of new housing in all categories;
then there are the more established areas of Woodland Acres, Oxford Heights
and Lincoln Park with price ranges of $230k -$270k for a +/- 20 years
home to something newer; while for those who long to be away from the
'madding crowd', one can find seclusion in the Burke Mountain area with
acreages from 1 to 5 acres to build your log cabin and hibernate within
the close confines of the city. There are also a good selection of exclusive
contemporary town-home complexes and condominium lifestyles for the young
busy professional or the retired. Town-home prices range from $150k to
$325k for the really exclusive. One can enjoy a most comfortable lifestyle
at affordable prices compared to Burnaby or Vancouver.
Education
Port Coquitlam enjoys the same access to post secondary facilities of
Douglas College (David Lam campus) and Simon Fraser University beside
having excellent elementary, middle and senior high schools; newly built
Terry Fox Senior Secondary with state of the art facilities has just
opened (September 1999).
Recreation
The Civic and private sporting facilities offers ample tennis & racquet
courts, swimming pools, ice rinks, several golf courses (Vancouver golf
club, Westwood Golf and Country club, Carnouties Golf Club) and playing
fields. For those who enjoy the outdoors, there is the Minnekhada Regional
Park (wildlife reserve, bird sanctuary, marsh, extensive walking trails),
and Mundy Park (175 hectare forest with 2 lakes in the city) right on
your door-step. There is a saying that because of all the trees and forest
in Coquitlam, one can smell the quality of air and lifestyle is so much
better; it is a great city to live in and raise a family.
This applies to Port Moody, Port Coquitlam as well, being in Tri-Cities.
